Abstract Glutaraldehyde cross linked magnetic chitosan nanoparticles were prepared through cross linking modification of magnetic chitosan nanoparticles using glutaraldehyde as cross linker that exhibited excellent Metanil Yellow adsorption performance. The characterization of synthesized cross-linked magnetic chitosan nanoparticles was performed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and vibrating sample magnetometry analyses. Adsorption characteristics of MetanilYellow aqueous solutions on to cross-linked magnetic chitosan nanoparticles have been studied and results indicated that the adsorption capacities were affected by initial pH values, initial dye concentrations and contact time. Metanil Yellow adsorption followed with the pseudo-second-order reaction, and equilibrium experiments were well fitted the Langmuir isotherm model. Maximum adsorption capacities of Metanil Yellow displayed at pH 4.0 and at 30�C, being upto 661 mg/g. Thermodynamic results demonstrated that the adsorption processes were spontaneous. Furthermore, it was found that the cross-linked magnetic chitosan nanoparticles can be regenerated and reused through dye desorption in alkaline solution.

Biosorption of Metanil Yellow from aqueous solution onto glutaraldehyde cross-linked magnetic chitosan nanoparticles
