Introducing specific directional interactions between colloids has the potential to assemble colloids in a programmable fashion into 3D architectures for applications in photonic, plasmonics, or catalysis. The presentation will introduce multiple synthetic methodologies for the formation of either colloidal patchy particles for directional self-assembly via noncovalent interactions or colloidal particles with well-defined multi-cavities that can be assembled using depletion forces. The assembly of these colloids into colloidal molecules and larger aggregates will be discussed.
