Small molecule activation (e.g., CO2, CH3CN, CH3NO2) by electron rich palladium-alkyl complexes is enhanced by the presence of Lewis acidic additives. The use of Lewis acids facilitates the activation of small molecules and subsequent formation of C-C bonds. Such reactions with CO2 (and other small molecules) are of great interest because of the potential to incorporate a cheap, abundant carbon source into organic molecules. Current research is focused on palladium and nickel POCOP (1,3-(diisopropylphosphinito)benzene) pincer complexes and their utility in C-H activation and C-C coupling reactions.
