Hexacarboxamide cryptands have been studied as anion receptors capable of encapsulating a variety of species within their endohedral cavities. We are exploring the use of these macro-bicyclic cryptands as ligands capable of coordinating both transition and main group metal ions within their trigonal binding pockets. The mBDCA-5t-H6 cryptand can be selectively tri- or hexa-deprotonated, enabling the preparation of both mono and bimetallic complexes. The bimetallic Sn(II) system exhibits clean reactivity with elemental selenium and sulfur, revealing significant conformational changes in the cryptand architecture upon small molecule binding. Additionally, the di-Sn(II) system serves as a platform for preparing trimetallic complexes, wherein the bimetallic Sn(II) cryptand itself behaves as a rigid bidentate L2 ligand capable of binding transition metals via the Sn(II) lone pairs. The metallation procedures, characterization, and reaction chemistry of these di and trimetallic systems will be discussed, highlighting a [SnPd0Sn(mBDCA-5t)]2- complex, which has shown reactivity with various small molecules including molecular oxygen.
