N,O-chelated zirconium(IV) catalysts have been reported for the intramolecular hydroamination of aminoalkenes and the intermolecular hydroamination of alkynes. While many neutral zirconium complexes are capable of catalyzing the hydroamination of primary aminoalkenes, cationic complexes are known to cyclize secondary amine substrates preferentially. Meanwhile, different N,O-chelates have been successfully used as ligands to promote the development of a neutral zirconium system that can mediate hydroamination with both primary and secondary amines with alkenes and alkynes. Investigations toward realizing the long-standing challenge of intermolecular alkene hydroamination with group 4 metals have revealed key aspects of ligand design. In an effort to better understand the relationship between structure and the mechanistic profile, different zirconium complexes have been synthesized, characterized and screened for hydroamination. Effects on catalysis that vary with tethered vs. non-tethered systems, tether length and nature of the N,O-chelate will be disclosed.
