Series of cyclometalated complexes M(pp)2+ (M= Ni, Au, Co, Cu and Pd, pp = polypyridine) were prepared and fully characterized. 1H NMR data indicate the coordination modes of the polypyridine are highly associated with the transition metals center, changing from monodentate to tridentate ligands. Electrochemical measurements and UV-visible absorption data provides insight for their electronic structures. Interestingly, Pd complexes are easily oxidized to Pd(IV) complexes by halide at room temperature, which is confirmed by the crystal structure.
