Over the past two decades Metal-Organic Materials (MOMs), as exemplified by porous coordination polymers, discrete metal-organic polyhedra and metal-organic frameworks, have experienced tremendous growth in both the number of research papers and their impact. MOMs are receiving such attention thanks in part to their modular nature, which affords them the potential to offer game-changing solutions for several important technological problems. MOMs can exhibit permanent porosity and many of their most anticipated applications, such as gas storage (e.g. carbon dioxide sequestration, natural gas storage and hydrogen storage), chemical separations, chemical sensing, catalysis, and drug delivery, involve the uptake or encapsulation of guests. It has been estimated that there are now ca. 20,000 MOMs.  However, there remain many challenges with respect to MOMs. In particular, the design of families of MOMs, �MOM platforms�, that facilitate a better fundamental understanding of structure/function relationships is of current interest since it teaches chemists and materials scientists how to design the right MOM for the right application.This presentation will address two matters related to the control of pore size and pore chemistry in MOM platform. First, the use of inorganic anions to introduce strong electrostatics into pores of pcu  and mmo  topology networks will be discussed. Such MOMs can exhibit benchmark performance with respect to polarizable sorbates such as CO2. Second, �2-step crystal engineering�, which facilitates the development of new classes of MOM based upon multiple nodes will be addressed. Several promising new (lon-e , fsb , fsc ) MOM platforms are being pursued by our research group and will be detailed in terms of their sorption performance.
