Treatment of landfill leachate by an electrochemical Fenton-like process (EC/Fe2+/Cl-) using a reaction of ferrous iron (Fe2+) and hypochlorous acid (HOCl) was studied in this work. HOCl was produced by electrolysis of high concentration of chloride ion in the leachate under acid condition, while Fe2+ could be regenerated from ferric iron at cathode. Hydroxyl radicals (�OH) generated by the Fenton-like process were strong oxidizing radicals that could remove COD from landfill leachate. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was employed as a probe for the determination of �OH through the reaction between �OH and DMSO generating quantitatively formaldehyde. The effects of pH, Fe2+ concentration and current density on COD removal were investigated in the system. The result showed that EC/Fe2+/Cl- system could be applicable to the treatment of landfill leachate.
