An easy and selective tool to characterize NDMA precursors was developed on the basis of the polarity rapid assessment method (PRAM). Strong cation exchange (SCX) cartridge could combine the functional group of dialkylamine of these precursors and C18 cartridge could adsorb the non-polar part. It is the first time that this tool was used to characterize the NDMA precursors in one impacted source water in China. The polar fraction contributed about 70% of DOC in this water while the non-polar fraction (C18 adsorbed) contributes 60% of NDMA precursor. Moreover, the positive charged fraction (SCX adsorbed) contains 60% of nitrosamine precursors and only 5% of DOC, which verify the high selectivity of PRAM for NDMA precursors in bulk organic. Besides, most of organics and NA precursors were found to be in MW<1k Da fraction. This method also helps to understand the mechanism of coagulation, adsorption and biotreatment for removing bulk organic matters and NA precursors .
