Surface water monitoring for pesticides in agricultural areas of California is one of the California Department of Pesticide Regulation's (CDPR's) key environmental monitoring activities. The goal of the monitoring activity is to provide data for a long-term assessment of surface water pesticide contamination. Grab water samples from multiple agricultural sites of three regions (Salinas, Santa Maria and Imperial) with heavy pesticide uses were collected from March to November, 2013. Pesticides including five organophosphate insecticides, six pyrethroid insecticides, two diacylhydrazine insecticides, one carbamate insecticide, one neonicotinoid insecticide, six dinitroaniline herbicides, one nitrofenylether herbicide, and one chloronitrile fungicide were analyzed for concentrations in unfiltered water samples. The detection frequencies and exceedances to aquatic life benchmarks will be reported and discussed. Results will provide useful data on the environmental fate and transport of current-use pesticides under a variety of conditions for use in the development of management responses.
