The spent Cr-etching solutions from thin-film transistor liquid-crystal display (TFT-LCD) industry are regarded as acidic hazardous waste which is usually treated by chemical precipitation and produces considerable amounts of hazardous sludge with liability. It is attractive to regenerate Ce(IV) from Ce(III) in spent Cr-etching solutions so that the regenerated solutions can be reused for recycling purposes. This paper focuses on the effect of electrode material and separator on the electro-regeneration of Ce(IV) in real spent Cr-etching solutions. According to the comparison of Ce(IV) yield, mass transfer and kinetic parameters, a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode was better than the other tested anodes and Nafion membranes were more suitable than Neosepta ones to be used as the separator for the Ce(IV) electro-regeneration process.
