Lysyl oxidase (LOX) is an enzyme associated with the replication of cancerous cells in their hypoxic environment. Inhibition of LOX by beta-aminopropionitrile (BAPN) has been known to prevent the metastasis of cancer cells throughout the human body. The inhibition of the LOX enzyme with the BAPN molecule has produced undesirable side effects because this molecule is highly reactive. The purpose of this experiment is to attach small carrier molecules to BAPN to ensure that it selectively reacts with cancerous cells.
