The recent emergence of antibiotic resistant pathogens has decreased the effectiveness of many commercial antibiotics. Rediscovery of known antibiotics has made it increasingly difficult to find new drug candidates for treating resistant pathogens. We have begun exploration of fungi from Boiling Springs Lake, Lassen Volcanic National Park, California as a source of potential novel antibiotics. Three fungi from underexplored Genera, Ochronconis sp., Paecilomyces sp., and Acidomyces sp., have been cultured, extracted and fractionated by reverse phase chromatography. Significant antibiotic activity was observed within the non-polar fractions from Ochronconis sp. and Paecilomyces sp., verses B. subtilus and E. coli. Further purification of active components is being carried out through HPLC. The structure of purified compounds will be determined by HPLC-ESI-MS, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR techniques.
