Cationic, shape-persistent, square molecules are a group of macrocycles that have displayed interesting structural, spectroscopic and materials-based properties. Herein we describe a novel synthesis of cationic squares, consisting of aromatic side groups interconnected by iodonium corner atoms. These tetracationic iodonium macrocycles are particularly interesting due to the ease at which they can be generated. To this end, several size and shaped macrocycles have been synthesized and spectroscopically analyzed.
