Alkali metal salts of cyanoborate anions are valuable starting materials for the synthesis of various chemicals, for example ionic liquids (ILs). Many of these ILs are low melting liquids with very low viscosities. Furthermore, they exhibit high thermal, chemical, and electrochemical stabilities. So far, especially ILs based on the tetracyanoborate anion [B(CN)4]�1,2 have been in the focus of interest and a number of electrochemical applications has been described, e.g. as component of the electrolyte composition for dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).3,4The potassium cyanoperfluoroalkylborates K[RFBFn(CN)3-n] (RF = CF3, C2F5, n = 0-2) and K[RFB(OCH3)n(CN)3-n] (RF = CF3, C2F5, n = 1-2) were synthesized in high yields starting from the trifluoro- and trimethoxyborates, respectively.5,6 Similarely, alkali metal salts of alkylcyanoborate anions of the types [RnB(CN)4-n]? (R = CH3, C2H5, n = 1-3) and [CH3BF(CN)2]� have been obtained.7 A number of ILs have been prepared with these new cyanoborate anions via simple metathesis reactions.5�8Most of these ILs exhibit a high electrochemical stability, a low melting point, and a low viscosity, which in some cases are below those of the corresponding tetracyanoborates.1) U.
