Fluorine substitution in organic and organometallic compounds drastically alters the properties of these materials. Despite the importance of the cyclopentadienyl ligand in organometallic chemistry methods to introduce fluorinated substituents into cyclopentadiene are still limited.Herein we report an efficient simple method for the synthesis of cyclopentadienes with one fluorinated substituent by reaction of cobaltocene with fluorinated alkenes.Depending on the reaction conditions mononuclear or dinuclear complexes are formed. Reaction with mild oxidation agents allows the isolation of the substituted cyclopentadienes which can be converted into cyclopentadienyl complexes of various metals.
