The ACS Science Policy Fellowship was the gateway to my professional career and allowed me to develop contacts that I have continued to engage throughout my career.  During my 1988-1989 fellowship, I explored the impact of the pending European Community integration on the U.S. Chemical Industry. This was a hot topic and there was significant concern in the US that the chemical industry would be harmed.  My training as a chemist (and my undergraduate degree in political science) were real assets in developing this project and considering the myriad of issues (some known and some unknown) that the chemical community faced at the time.  Since my fellowship, I have been extremely fortunate to have a rich and diverse career spanning academia, corporate, government (NIH, NSF), and non-profit sectors.  Being a professionally trained chemist, I was assumed to possess a certain level of competency and was able to apply my experiences to tackle a myriad of challenges throughout my career.
