Metal-organic frameworks have emerged as a promising class of materials for application in hydrogen and methane storage due to remarkable properties such as high degree of porosity and structural stability. In addition, the properties of these materials can be tuned using a wide range of parameters, making it possible to modify them for practical applications.The work presented here focuses on the study of a number of metal-organic frameworks based on benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate linker to show that it is possible to enhance hydrogen and methane sorption properties by varying the synthetic parameters. It is also shown that these parameters can be employed to change the pore size and shape, metal coordination geometry and crystal structure of metal-organic frameworks having the same metal cation and same linker. For example, figures 1a and 1b show two different coordination environments of Mn2+ with the same linker, obtained by modification of the synthesis conditions. In this case two different types of channels can be obtained by adjusting the ratios of different components in the solvent mixtures used in syntheses. The modification of the synthesis condition and the changes in the structural parameters lead to significant changes in hydrogen and methane sorption capacities of these materials.
