Engine lubricants and fuels contain pharmaceuticals (i.e. additives) that are required to maintain the health of the internal combustion engine (ICE) and prevent or cure many of its common diseases. Some of the functions of these designer drugs include precisely controlling the rheological properties of the oil as a function of temperature so that fluid flow through the engine's circulatory system is unimpeded and oil pressure and viscosity is maintained at an optimum level.  The additives must disperse particles or debris formed during food digestion (i.e. combustion) and prevent clogging of the fluid passageways by deposition on and flaking off from the walls of the arteries (i.e. varnish, wear and corrosion).  Ensuring adequate supply of food, especially at low temperatures when the liquid food tends to solidify, into the digestive system (combustion chamber) of the ICE is another key function of these additives.  In order to develop step-out designer drugs for ICEs, advanced scientific knowledge of the underlying mechanism of action of these additives and their interaction with each other is required.  This talk will focus on where Infineum has been able to find new advantaged solutions to old problems by developing mechanistic understanding of the mode of action of these additives.
