Formation of C-N coupled products is achieved traditionally by reacting aryl halides with amines via a Pd(0)/Pd(II) catalytic cycle (Buchwald-Hartwig amination). A newer, more atom-economical approach to synthesis of amines is based on metal catalyzed oxidative C-H amination. Recent reports on Pd-catalyzed oxidative C-H amination suggest the involvement of Pd0/PdII or Pd(II)/Pd(IV) redox couple. The goal of this work is the development of new stoichiometric and catalytic C-H amination reactions utilizing Pd(II)/Pd(IV) redox couple and H2O2 as terminal oxidant. In this effort, di-2-pyridylketone (dpk) ligated palladacycles derived from some arylamine and alkylamine substrates were synthesized, oxidized with H2O2 and the reductive elimination of the resulting high valent Pd species monitored.
