Mononuclear copper hydrides are probable intermediates in catalytic hydrosilylation of carbonyl compounds. We therefore targeted a copper(II) hydride ToMCuH (ToM = tris(4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolinyl)borate) for synthesis and catalytic studies. The precursor, ToMCuX, is prepared by reaction of CuBr2 with TlToM, and this has been transformed into ToMCuOtBu by the reaction of ToMCuBr with KOtBu. ToMCuOtBu yields (ToMCuOH)2 upon hydrolysis. These compounds were characterized by X-ray crystallography, FTIR, EPR and elemental analysis. Reactions of these copper(II) compounds and silane give the copper(I) compound ToMCu. ToMCu is independently synthesized via two routes: through salt metathesis of TlToM and Cu(I)X (X= Cl, Br, I) in pyridine or through the reduction of ToMCuBr using Na-Hg in benzene. NMR, FTIR and elemental analysis are used to characterize ToMCu. Because we saw reduction with silanes, there seemed to be a possibility of redox catalysis and results will be discussed.
