Yolk@shell or nanorattle-type nanoparticles, which encapsulate a movable metal core within a hollow shell, have been proved to be promising candidates as nanoreactor systems that confine the seed-mediated growth of metal nanocrystals inside the cavity as well as selectively and repeatedly catalyze the organic reaction. Herein, we would like to present recent findings in our efforts toward introducing catalytically active Pd or Pt nanocrystal as a core particle of the yolk@shell-nanoreactor through incorporating Pd2+ or Pt2+ ions in the reductive Fe3O4 dissolution process within the silica nanosphere. During the reductive treatment of the silica nanosphere co-encapsulating a Fe3O4/Au hybrid nanocrystal and Pd2+ ions, the reduced Pd was found to be integrated with the Au nanocrystal left inside the newly generated void space. Such a spontaneous assembly of an Au/Pd heterojuction nanocrystal resulted in the formation of the yolk@shell nanoparticle, (Au/Pd)@h-SiO2  , in which a dumbbell-like Au/Pd nanoparticle is captured inside the cavity of a hollow and porous silica naoshell. The resulted (Au/Pd)@h-SiO2 , exhibited the targeted nanoreactor performance for templating the synthesis of the less reducible Ni nanocrystal through allowing the Ni growth to be initiated only from the Au/Pd-hybrid seed placed at the cavity, which demonstrates the extension of the utility of the yolk@shell-type nanoreactor to the synthesis of non-noble metal nanocrystals. - Assembly of an Au/Pd heterojuction nanocrystal inside the hollow silica nanoshell
