We utilized liquid chromatography to assess substituent effects on p-p interactions by the separation of small chiral molecules.  Small chiral molecules with varied electronic character were prepared and separated on chiral columns. The retention data imply that the presence of the offset p-p interaction can orient the molecules in solution during column interaction, enabling better separation. It was found that the magnitude of the p-p interaction is dependent on the position, the electronic character and the size of the substituent. These results suggest that both electrostatics and sterics can both have significant contributions towards aromatic interactions in solution.
