Modification of amide groups in biologically active molecules has long been a popular strategy to discover new classes of active molecules and to optimize known classes.  We have applied the carbonyl transposition strategy of moving a carbonyl to the opposite site of an amide moiety to several areas of herbicide chemistry and found that in each case it led to different outcomes in terms of relative biological activity.
