We attempted to synthesize a hybrid nanostructure by the incorporation of Au nanoparticles (NPs) with polymer-coated Fe3O4 microspheres. Polymerization occurred easily on the Fe3O4 microspheres because of hydrogen bonding between citrate ions and monomers. Moreover, immobilization of the Au nanoparticles on the polymer was easily achieved at 70 �C without the use of a reducing agent. Au NPs on 3-aminopropyl triethylsilane (APTS)-modified Fe3O4@SiO2 and Fe3O4@polymer microspheres were also synthesized to assess the catalytic activity of Au NPs on Fe3O4@polymer microspheres for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol.Then, we monitored the catalytic activity of Fe3O4@P(EGDMA-co-MAA)/Au catalysts for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, and it was found that the catalyst showed high TOF values in various nitro compounds. Moreover, the Fe3O4/P(EGDMA-co-MAA)/Au catalysts could be reused five times without any significant loss of catalytic activity. In the superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) data, there was almost no difference in magnetization between Fe3O4@P(EGDMA-co-MAA) and Fe3O4@P(EGDMA-co-MAA)/Au. Lastly, the Fe3O4@P(EGDMA-co-MAA)/Au microspheres showed a high saturation magnetization value.
