The design and synthesis of well-defined mesoporous three-dimensional (3D) structures have attracted much attention due to their excellent performance in heterogeneous catalysis, oxygen sensor technology and other applications. Ceria has been received considerable interests as an excellent supporting materials, due to its strong oxygen storage and release ability arising from the facile conversion between Ce(III) and Ce(IV). Well-define mesoporous ceria matereials are highly desirable in the field of catalysis. Cerium carbonate hydroxide (CeCO3OH) becomes an ideal precursor to prepare ceria (CeO2) without changing its original morphology. Rational synthesis of CeCO3OH materials is an effective way to construct ceria materials with unique morphology and structure. Different kinds of 3D structures of CeCO3OH, for example, flowerlike micro/nano-structure, 3-fold dendrites and apple-like structure have been synthesized by adding complex organic compounds such as PVP, PEG and sodium tartrate in the reaction systems. Most of the complex organic compounds not merely cause environmental pollution, but also is hard to remove in the post-treatment. Obviously, it is highly desired to develop a facile method for building well-ordered 3D structures of CeCO3OH.In this study, we proposed a CO-assisted hydrothermal approach with only ethylene glycol (EG), water and cerium nitrate in the aqueous phase to synthesized CeCO3OH/CeO2 microspheres of 3D curved structure. Rodlike building blocks interconnected by nanoparticles circle around to form each microsphere, which is in micrometer scale. Due to the coexistence of nanostructure and microstructure in them, CeCO3OH/CeO2microspheres possess high specific surface area which can still be kept after thermal decomposition.Moreover, the curved structure can effectively prevent further aggregation and maintain high catalytic activity. In addition, the CeCO3OH/CeO2 microspheres could also play the role as catalyst supports. In this report, we used it to prepare active gold catalysts and found that the Au/CeO2 catalysts exhibit excellent activity for CO oxidation at room temperature.
