One of the key challenges in studying the upgrading processes including hydrodeoxygenation, hydrogenation and dehydration is to determine the mechanisms. Indeed, most research work in this area was trying to explore the reaction mechanisms by both experimentaland computational methods. To explore the reaction intermediates and possible mechanisms, in-situ monitoring of isotopic atoms traced reactions appear to be very attractive. The heating function of the NMR equipment and high pressure NMR tube provide an opportunity for such in-situ NMR monitoring of upgrading processes. This study will investigate conversion mechanisms for dehydration of ethanol to produce ethylene, which is one of the most important petroleum chemicals by in situ NMR monitoring. The general goal of this work is to develop a universal method which could provide the insights into the mechanisms and intermediates. The computational work will also be examined to support the experimental observations.
