Heterogeneous catalysis occurs by means of surface organometallic intermediates. The synthesis, full characterization and reactivity of such surface organometallic intermediates shed some light on elementary steps of heterogeneous catalysis. The synthesis and full characterization of well-defined silica-supported =Si�O�W(Me)5, =Si�O�W(PMe3)(Me)(=CH2)2, (=SiO-)W(=CH)Me2, =Si�O�Ta(Me)4  =Si�O�Ta(Me)2Cl2 , =Si�O�Ta(=CH2)Cl2  will be described. Their stoichiometric and catalytic reactivity will be exemplified in alkane and cycloalkane metathesis.
