Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is an emerging new imaging modality which provides the excellent optical contrast of fluorescence imaging with the low scattering and high depth profiling of ultrasound imaging in biological media. In order to image objects of interest such as tumors for cancer detection, the PA signal needs to be significant compared to that of the surrounding tissue. Exogenous contrast agents are required for PA imaging in deeper structures for enhanced contrast. Preliminary data is here presented for the characterization of curcumin inspired systems using electrochemical and computational analysis as well as absorption/emission and optical Z-scan photoacoustic spectroscopy methods.
