Block copolymers offer the possibility to prepare isoporous membranes, if the self-assembling process in a solution is combined in a suitable way with a freezing step, as it can be achieved by precipitating an appropriately designed block copolymer solution into a nonsolvent. This can lead to highly regular membrane surfaces which have open pores of very narrow size distribution. These selective layers are supported by a less regular, more porous substructure of the same material acting as a mechanical support. Both flat sheet membranes and hollow fibre membranes will be discussed in terms of preparation conditions. Characterisation is carried out by scanning electron microscopy, small angle x-ray scattering, rheology, and water flux.
