A broad series of novel racemic and optically active ligands with axial chirality - trans-5,6-disubstituted 5,6-dihydro-1,10-phenanthrolines - has been prepared and studied by NMR, CD analysis and X-ray crystallography. The conformational study by 1H NMR demonstrated that the switch of axial chirality can be achieved either by variation of solvent or by structural modification of substituents. Experiments confirm that the controlled axial chirality of new ligands has a potential for their use in the design of catalysts with dual enantioselectivity for asymmetric synthesis.
