The increasing ease with which chemists are able to target and functionalise C�H bonds has transformed the landscape of chemical synthesis. Here, we present sequential C�H functionalisation as an exclusive strategy in the synthesis of the marine alkaloid dictyodendrin B. We were able to easily identify and functionalise all 7 positions around an indole core in quick succession to deliver the highly functionalised natural product. Striking features of the synthesis are the excellent regioselectivity of each step and the absence of any superfluous directing groups. This work sets a new precedent for the application of this concept in the rapid synthesis of complex molecules and provides the potential for straightforward access of derivatives for further activity and optimisation studies.
