Carbon monoxide releasing molecules (CORMs) are currently of interest for potential therapeutic applications due to the identification of several beneficial health effects associated with the controlled administration of small amounts of CO. To date, the vast majority of CORMs reported are low-valent metal-carbonyl compounds, with the most widely used CORM used to date being the divalent ruthenium complex [Ru(CO)3Cl(glycinate)] (CORM-3). Divalent Ru(II) complexes are also actively under investigation as anticancer agents. Recently, complexes of the general formula [Ru(?6-p-cymene)Cl(3-hydroxyflavonolate)] have been examined for their anticancer and topoisomerase inhibition reactivity. Based on our previous discovery of photoinduced CO-release reactivity in divalent metal flavonolate complexes, we have evaluated whether [Ru(?6-p-cymene)Cl(3-hydroxyflavonolate)] complexes are prone to exhibit photoinduced CO release upon UV or visible light irradiation. The results of these investigations will be reported along with an evaluation of the cytotoxicity of the pre- and post-irradiated compounds.
