Cheap and efficient water-oxidation catalysts remain one of the major hurdles in the implementation of a hydrogen economy. A promising solution to this hurdle is the use of inexpensive oxide minerals. Studies of water oxidation by birnessite minerals, which are of interest due to synthetically tunable physical and chemical properties. One of the lingering questions in both this system and the biologoical manganese-based water oxidizing complex is role of oxidation state on catalysis. This work addresses these questionsby comparison of gas evolution experiments over a range of birnessite oxidation states. The results suggest a higher efficacy of thelower oxidation state catalysts based upon reaction kinetics.
