1,2,3-Triazoles have recently emerged as a new class of ligands in coordination chemistry.[1] Using the copper catalyzed azid-alkyne cycloaddition, readily available starting materials can be used. Thus, ligand libraries can be easily built up, and used for the complexation of suitable metal precursors. Our group has investigated tripodal ligands that originate from the reaction of tripropargylamine with benzyl azide (tbta) and phenyl azide (tpta) in combination with 3d metal ions such as cobalt(II)[2] and nickel(II)[3]. In this contribution, the synthesis and characterization of the two complexes [Fe(tbta)2]2+ (1 ) and [Fe(tpta)2]2+ (2 ) is presented. Unexpectedly, the two complexes show a completely different coordination sphere around the metal with respect to the nitrogen donor atoms of the ligands, which also affects their electronic structure: While 1 shows spin crossover around room temperature, 2 remains in the high spin state independent of temperature. The study is completed by M�ssbauer spectroscopy and ab initio calculations to provide further insights into the electronic structures.
