In recent years, there have been promising reports of using I-III-VI single source precursors (SSPs) to make semiconducting chalcopyrite nanomaterials.  The advantages of using SSPs in preparation of nanomaterials are precise control of product stoichiometry, and the corresponding flexibility in other reaction conditions.  To better understand the mechanism by which I-III-VI SSPs interact and ultimately form materials, their behavior in solution has been studied. In particular, exchange of terminal and bridging thiolate groups in (PR3)2ME(SR)4, and exchange with added metal thiolate complexes have been investigated by NMR at variable temperatures. The latter process has also been explored as an alternative method of SSP synthesis.
