Although CO bears a negative connotation as �silent killer�, the therapeutic potential of this small molecule has been realized recently. The emergence of photoCORMs (photo induced carbon monoxide releasing molecules) is significant in this context, as these species provide an opportunity towards sustianable CO release to a desired target. In the present work, we have synthesized and characterized two isostructural metal carbonyls namely, [MnBr(azpy)(CO)3] and [ReBr(azpy)(CO)3] derived from the ligand 2-(Phenylazo)pyridine. Both complexes exhibit distinct MLCT (metal-to-ligand charge transfer) band in visible region. However, the Mn complex rapidly releases CO upon illumination with visible light, whereas the Re congener fails to do so under the same condition. The latter only exhibits CO release upon UV lightillumination. DFT studies were performed to gain an insight into this surprising discrepancy in light sensitivity. The results from these studies are expected to serve as credible guidelines for the design of new photoCORMs that can be sensitized with light in the visible/nearIR range.
