The PhET project has developed more than 30 research-based chemistry simulations designed to be highly engaging and educationally effective for students. The simulations provide interactive environments in which students learn by engaging in such scientific practices as exploration, investigation, and experimentation, with accurate feedback in real time. PhET simulations emphasize the connections between real life phenomena and the underlying science, make the invisible visible, and incorporate models and representations that experts use to guide their thinking.  The design of each simulation involves an iterative process that includes a team of content, pedagogical and interface experts, and is informed by student interviews.   In this presentation, we will discuss how the PhET design principles support the three spheres of activity for scientists (investigating, evaluating, and developing explanations and solutions) and how teaching with PhET simulations can address the eight practices for K-12 classrooms, with examples from PhET simulation lessons and activities.  Finally, we will share activity guidelines for maximizing student engagement with interactive chemistry simulations.
