Many students are hooked on reading weather maps. In engaging students in learning chemistry, one of my goals is to get them hooked on reading air quality maps as well. Their ability to use information about tropospheric ozone, fine particles, and perhaps carbon monoxide will serve them well not only during their chemistry course but also as indoor and outdoor exercise enthusiasts, parents, travelers and, of course, citizens for the rest of their life. Behind an air quality map, there is a LOT of chemistry. This talk will provide resources, examples, stories, and perhaps inspiration for teaching a topic that may be on your drawing boards for one that can engage students over a lifetime.
