Chemistry courses at undergraduate institutions and elsewhere often focus on the best and brightest methods and reactions. For citizens of developing countries these methods are often impractical and there is a need for technology that is inexpensive, effective, and �good enough�. This idea of focusing on chemistries for those in need was presented in a Senior Seminar course and was prefaced with the service-based mission of the Catholic undergraduate institution. Students researched problems facing the developing world, discussed the impact of these problems with professors from the humanities and social sciences, and ultimately presented literature reviews in areas of inexpensive or green power generation, micronutrient enhanced foods, inexpensive and point of care water quality testing, and low cost diabetes treatment. Through this course, students have demonstrated a great interest in using their chemistry knowledge while serving as a global citizen. Information on the design of this course, snapshots of student work, and student comments will be presented.
