The extensive production and usage of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) have led to an increasing detection and occurrence of PPCPs in various water environments, which has brought a significant risk for both ecosystem integrity and public health. This study thus aims to develop an effective method for the removal of PPCPs before their discharging into the environment. Considering the low reaction of sulfate radical (SR) with natural organic matter (NOM) that is generally present in natural water, sulfate radical based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) have been regarded as promising alternatives in water treatment. Different technologies, including UV-254 nm and transition metals, were investigated for the activation of persulfate to generate reactive sulfate radicals. Both degradation kinetics and reaction mechanisms of the target PPCPs were evaluated. This study provides a good assessment on the application of SR-AOPs.
