Reactive sulfur and nitrogen species carry out a myriad of functions in biology. We are interested in examining the fundamental chemistry of these small molecules at heme iron sites. This talk will describe our efforts to synthesize and characterize biomimetic metal porphyrinate complexes that contain reactive sulfur and nitrogen species as ligands. Isolation of such compounds has allowed for an in-depth examination of their reactivity as it pertains to potential biological mechanisms of action and to the interplay between sulfur and nitrogen containing small molecules at metal ion sites.
