The fallacy that faculty in a research university cannot or will not be innovators in teaching and education of students and the public has been front and center in political critiques of investment on higher education. This talk reports on 32 years of work at the University at Buffalo, a connected series of efforts rooted in strong principles of mentoring (1), commitment to service and seeking excellence in educating students and the public. The links to research progress are very clear.  Examples will be presented including the connections between research and graduate education, curricular development for innovation in university level chemistry and general education, service learning, community based environmental collaborations emphasizing chemical analysis (2,3) and K-12 STEM development (4,5). The laboratory of Buffalo and Western New York puts external work in a historical context, and roots the educational goals in practical and relevant work for students and faculty. Further, strong engagement of graduate students and undergraduates in research and service learning enhances their education while adding expertise to external work.1. Joseph A.
