As chemists we are often asked to address public concerns about the safety of chemicals found in consumer products. The evaluation of chemical safety is intimately related to the interpretation of complex health and toxicity data that most chemists do not regularly follow. Generalizations about the relative safety or hazard of chemical products have the potential to confuse the public and rarely accurately represent the current state of scientific knowledge. This session will feature speakers with experience translating and commutating issues associated with hazard and risk to the public. I have expertise in communicating these issues in a variety of formats but especially online. I am the founder and senior editor of the blog Sustainable Nano, which is part of the outreach efforts of the NSF-funded Center for Sustainable Nanotechnology.
