Bio-oils derived from fast pyrolysis of wood are typically stabilized by hydrotreatment for fuel applications.[1] As part of a national program for the valorization of lignin,[2] we have investigated oxidative approaches to lignin-derived bio-oil stabilization and molecular weight reduction of heavy fractions. Fast pyrolysis and catalytic pyrolysis of several lignin types afforded bio-oils that were subsequently treated with oxygen in polar solvents in the presence of several oxovanadium catalysts. Reductions in bio-oil acidity and viscosity will be described along with separation strategies to obtain phenolic chemicals.[1] D. Mohan, C. U. Pittman, Jr., P. H.
