This presentation will review past work in our group involving the exploitation of the Kubas interaction in hydrogen storage and the discovery of a new class of transition metal-based hydrogen storage materials based that display rising enthalpies with surface coverage, large linear regions in adsorption isotherms, and reversible activities of up to 10 wt% at 298 K and 120 atm.  The metastable species TiH5 and TiH7 will be discussed in relation to TiH3 in relation to supporting Raman, neutron scattering, and thermodynamic data, as will the related V, Cr, and Mn systems.  The concept of the 'Kubas Solvate' will be introduced and discussed.  The ability of homoleptic transition metal hydrides to absorb large amounts of hydrogen by the Kubas interaction at ambient temperature and low pressures under essentially thermodynamically neutral conditions opens the door to future applications in on-board conformable tank design.
