Amidates, ureates, pyridonates and phosphoramidates have proven to be useful N,O-chelating ligands for the complexation of early transition metals. Hydroamination and hydroaminoalkylation are 100% atom economic reactions for the preparation of selectively substituted amines from simple amines and alkenes as starting materials. N,O-chelated complexes of Group 4 and 5 metals are known to be useful catalysts for these desirable transformations. Recent advances in the application of these complexes in the synthesis of substituted amines and heterocycles will be highlighted. Catalyst development efforts to access low temperature reactivity, expanded substrate scope and regio- and stereoselective product formation will be discussed.
