Although water technologies exist for treating water to potable levels, the technological complexity, high energy, operation and maintenance costs inhibit their use in many communities in developing countries. When addressing these challenges, water source and contaminant specifics are often neglected together with the socio-cultural and economic characteristics of the community, yet these factors are critical in developing functional solutions for potable water. This inquiry into the actual realities characterizing the small, rural and impoverished communities and their needs for potable water treatment technologies represents an effort to overcome the typical errors made by frequently implementing unsuitable water treatment solutions.
