Predicting the distribution of engineered nanomaterials in the environment will provide critical information for risk assessment and policy development to regulate these emerging contaminants. In this work, we explore the applicability of some advanced statistical methodologies on simulating and predicting the transport of engineered nanoparticles in the subsurface. Hypothetical scenarios for the introduction of nanomaterials into the subsurface environment were investigated using a numerical transport model developed based on a modified Modular Three-Dimensional Multispecies Transport Model, which was validated using nC60 nanoparticle transport experimental data. Response surface methodology was applied to develop simple relationships between key factors that control ENM transport and key parameters that describe nanoparticle concentration distributions in porous media. Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average Modeling was applied to forecast the aqueous phase nanoparticle plume far front and attached phase far front of nC60 nanoparticles in the subsurface based on numerically generated data.
