Cd(II) and Pb(II) are important environmental contaminants. Adsorption of these species to clay minerals can affect their transport and bioavailability. Furthermore, these cations can be used as probes of reactive surface sites. In tandem with adsorption of probe molecules such as TFS, we are attempting to quantify reactive surface sites on environmentally relevant mineral surfaces. This project combines experimental adsorption experiments characterized by EXAFS, XANES and NMR with computational models of the surface complex structure, energetics and spectroscopic properties. We examine the (100) and (001) surfaces of gibbsite and the (100) surface ofkaolinite for a variety of potential surface complexes and compare the results to available experimental data.
